Phytotherapy in Female infertility

Causes of female infertility include anatomical disorders, hormonal dysfunction, obstruction of tubes, systemic diseases, chocolate cysts, polycystic ovarian disease, advanced age, low number of ovules. Apart from these chronic diseases, immune system disturbances are also an important factor.

Medical treatment

Depending on the underlying cause, surgery or drug treatment may be needed.

Inoculation or in vitro fertilization may also be performed.

Alimentation

Foods which include hormones and chemicals in the production stages should be avoided. All foods should be consumed seasonably and the contents should be verified. Frozen foods, foods with a long shelf life and exposure to heavy metals and toxins should be avoided.

It is important to regularly consume nutrients with high antioxidant and high vitamin content. Cauliflower, brussel sprouts, dark green-leaved vegetables (spinach, silverbeet, pepperweed, rocket), cabbage, broccoli will be the right choice.

Smoking should be quit and exposure to smoke should be avoided.

Alcohol consumption should be reduced or discontinued.

Flavanoids found in onion increase the number of follicles and helps with good development of uterine wall. However, onion should not be heated or boiled, only brewing process will be beneficial.

Pomegranate will increase the quality and vitality of sperm with its rich antioxidant content.

Weight should be under control.

If the workplace is too stressful, the individual should be kept away from such environment, if not, natural methods should be used to cope with stress.

Vitamin and mineral supplements:

Vitamin B improves the quality of the follicles and the uterine wall. B complex vitamins along with colourful vegetables and dried thick-shelled nuts will be very beneficial. In particular, vitamin B6 can be taken additionally.

Vitamin C is an important vitamin with antioxidant properties. It is efficient in increasing folicle quality and getting a healthy conception. Daily use of 1000 mg of vitamin C will be enough to create a positive effect. Especially in smokers, up to 3000 mg per day can be used.  

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin and an intense antioxidant. A study by Bayer et al. showed that daily use of 100 IU vitamin E increases follicle quality. However, it should be used carefully because overdosing can be toxic.

Coenzyme Q10 has a positive effect on follicle quality due to its antioxidant properties. 60-80 mg daily amount should be used for 3 months.

Zinc deficiency has negative effects on many body features, including the quality of follicles and the integrity of uterine wall. 45 mg zinc per day will be sufficient, but it is necessary to use it for 3 months prior to fertilization treatment. However, long-term zinc use causes lack of copper, so it may be necessary to use daily 1-2 mg of copper after a while.

 Selenium has antioxidant properties on the ovules. Daily 100 mg intake is recommended.

 Folic acid is a substance that must be used for conception, ovule quality and prevention of spinal bifida. It should be used for 6 months before treatment or pregnancy.

Vitamin D and vitamin K should be given together as a supplement therapy for every woman who wants to become pregnant.   

Herbal treatment

Common yarrow: Beneficial for menstrual irregularities and excessive menstrual pain. After the regulation of menstruation and in case of conception, it should be discontinued.

Lady’s mantle: With its countless benefits on women, it is used as a treatment agent in all gynecological diseases. For those who can’t manage to have a child, it acts by providing hormonal balance. It increases the amount and effects of oestrogen hormone and provides healthy growth of uterine wall. It can be used as infusion, hot water cure, oil and cream. Infusion prepared with 4 g of lady’s mantle can be consumed 2-3 times a day. It shouldn’t be used with sweeteners and on a full stomach.

Shepherd's purse: With a content of flavonoids, potassium and saponins, it has regulatory effects on menstruation. It also provides hormonal balance and increases hormonal receptor sensitivity of the germ cells, in this way it promotes the development and improvement of follicles and uterus. It is usually consumed in infusion form.               

Vitex: It is a magnificent plant that provides hormonal regulation. Therefore, it regulates the menstruation, helps integrity of uterus wall and encourages regular development of the ovules.
