The material can be used after a process of cleansing, removing foreign materials and passing through a strain with a certain pore width.
To prepare an infusion, pour boiling water on the coarse powder (2%), keep in a warm container for 5 minutes. Freshly prepared infusion should be used.
For decoxion, pour cold water on 2% coarse powder, heat it with low heat for 30 minutes meanwhile frequent stir it. Filter while hot. Freshly prepared material should be used.
If the plant has flower, thin leaves or essential oil, infusion shall be prepared, whereas for those with thick leaves or soft fruits decoction is needed. Boil for 1-2 minutes and wait for 5 minutes. If the plant has roots, shell, hard fruit or seed, decoction process should be longer.
When used with alcohol or ether (20%), it is kept in a closed container in a dark environment for 10 days and then strained. In this case, the solution is evaporated to make it solid or viscous.
Properly collected and obtained products must be standardized with chromatographic and spectrophotometric methods before used as a drug.
Products prepared with standardized plants within the European Union are required to have a place of use for at least 15 years in the market for the same purpose, or for 30 years in traditional medicine.
